Why is cork such an environmentally friendly material?

Cork is the name given to the peeled bark of the cork oak tree. Peeling the bark does not harm the cork oak, provided it is old and strong enough at the time of peeling. This is usually the case when it is 25 years old. After peeling, the cork oak tree regenerates the bark over several years. Cork is therefore a natural renewable material that does not require the death of a tree to obtain. Cork oaks live to be about 200 years old and can be peeled about every nine years. While it forms the bark, the cork oak extracts a considerable amount of CO2 from the environment, which it stores in the cork. During the production of Skaben's Pro Climate organic flooring, less CO2 is released than is stored in the cork used. Therefore, this flooring has a negative carbon footprint. The cork for this flooring comes from the cork oak forests of the western Mediterranean. This use of cork gives the cork oak forests great economic importance, which protects them from deforestation. In addition to CO2 storage, these forests also have an important function as a habitat for animals and plants, some of which live only there and are threatened with extinction.
