Are vapour barrier and footfall sound insulation really necessary?The vapour barrier, also called moisture barrier, is a thin plastic film. It prevents moisture escaping from the subfloor from penetrating into the parquet. It is absolutely necessary if parquet is laid on screed or other mineral subfloors, on ceramic tiles or over underfloor heating systems. However, a vapour control layer must never be laid if the substrate is made of wood. If the wood cannot release any moisture, it starts to mold.Impact sound insulation must always be installed if the parquet is laid in a floating manner. There is a layer of air between the loose parquet and the subfloor. This amplifies the impact sound like a resonance body. It is often advisable to use a combination of vapour barrier and impact sound insulation. If the parquet is glued over the entire surface, impact sound insulation is not required.
